Outdoor Digital Signage – Coping with the sun

When outdoor digital signage is deployed outside in high temperatures, strange things start to happen to the screen, so you have to look at protecting the screen and give the TV its own sun screen.

In the UK, it is a very strange phenomenon to see the sun, however even in the UK any outdoor digital signage solution has to have enough protection, for example dedicated, sealed LCD and plasma televisions are sited outdoors in shelters, these shelters offer two types of protection, one is so that people can take a break from the intense heat but the main reason is to safe guard their investment and protect the TV.

Apart from the problem with direct sunlight on the TV screen and not being able to see either the program or the advertisement is a complete waste of money, the other problem that occurs is that without UV protection the LCD crystals start to break down and this will result in the TV having to be replaced much earlier than it would have been if the viewing screen offered the correct protection.

Now when you get to countries such as America and Australia where the temperature can reach in excess of 140 degrees Fahrenheit, you need some serious protection.

The options are to purchase a dedicated outdoor LCD screen with a refrigeration unit on the back to cool the unit, but this has two drawbacks, the first is cost as these range from four to 6 thousand pounds. The second issue is that the noise from the cooling unit on the back of the TV can sometimes be noisy and off putting for customers.

The other solution is to install an outdoor LCD enclosure, these are specially manufactured cases that are designed to cope in temperatures on 150 Fahrenheit and the best units come complete with an anti reflective viewing screen that also offers UV protection for the screen, once a standard or commercial grade is installed the thermostat is set and the doors is locked. The internal cooling system only works when it is needed and then resets itself, so when the internal temperature rises, the thermostat activates the cooling system.
