Choosing a TV – Making Your Digital Signage Campaign A Success.

When you are choosing a flat panel TV display for your digital signage solution, there are a number of things to consider – these tips will make your solution a success.

If you are anything like me, when I first saw the back of my new flat screen TV, I went crazy with all the choices of inputs and outputs. Now displays that are used for digital signage are normally widescreen with an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Now the following inputs and outputs are very useful when using the display for dynamic advertising.

VGA & HDMI.
This is the Industry standard for connecting media players to displays with HDMI connection catching up quickly, the advantage of HDMI is that the image is of a higher quality, with this in mind many of the manufacturers of media players are launching products that have an HDMI output.

USB.
This is one input that is very versatile, allowing everything to be connected form a keyboard to payment terminal, however they are little used in a digital signage hardware application, due to other better suited connectors.

Legacy Connections.
These are classed as the old S-video and composite outputs, these only support the old aspect ratio of 4:3 and thus need to be stretched when displayed on 16:9 screens.

Now hopefully the crazy inputs and outputs have been cleared up and so onto the the actual television.

On to the TV.
When you look for a display for a signage campaign, you want a solution that delivers high resolution images, gone are the days of the old CRT television. The resolution has to be top notch with that we mean 1080p ideally.

If you do not know what 1080p is, let us explain:

Each TV screen is made up of horizontal and vertical lines, normally represented as 480 vertical scanning lines and 720 horizontal scanning lines this is common of a TV in 4:3 aspect ration. So a screen with 1080 has 1080 vertical lines creating a clearer and sharper image.

Then there are the letters following the 1080, they can be 1080i or 1080p. 1080i the “i” stands for interlaced, this means the resolution is 1920 x 1080 or another way is 2.1 million pixels.

1080p is the higher standard and the “p” stands for progressive scanning, making the images even brighter and sharper. This provides a true high definition solution and this is what is needed in digital signage.
