Understanding the NEMA specifications.
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA for short) developed a range of standards for electrical and electronic equipment enclosures. NEMA 4.
The Type 4
enclosures are predominantly intended for indoor or outdoor use
primarily to provide a degree of protection against wind borne
dust and rain, splashing water and hose-directed water and to be
undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure. They are
not intended to provide protection against conditions such
as internal condensation or internal icing.
NEMA 4X.
The Type 4X
enclosures are intended for indoor and outdoor use. Providing a
degree of protection against corrosion, wind borne dust and
rain, splashing water, and hose-directed water; and to be
undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure. they are
not intended to provide protection against conditions such
as internal condensation or internal icing.
NEMA 12.
The Type
12 enclosures are intended for indoor use only, primarily
to provide a degree of protection against circulating dust,
falling dirt, and dripping none corrosive liquids. They are
not intended to provide protection against such conditions
as internal condensation.
NEMA 13.
The Type 13 enclosures are intended for indoor use only,
primarily to provide a degree of protection against lint, dust,
spraying of water, oil and none corrosive coolant. They are
not intended to provide protection against conditions such
as internal condensation.
