The problem arises when the inmates meet each other on are reminded of home. In the UK a study found that the 12,560 women prisoners injured themselves by slashing themselves in the past 12 months. In 2003 6437 reported injuries occurred for women prisoners, as you can see this is a huge increase.

Many of the women in prison in this study had committed minor crimes due to a mental illness or drug abuse. It is completely unacceptable how women are treated in the UK’s over crowded penal system; it demonstrates how disturbed the inmates are by the quantity of self harming doubling said one government minister.

A director for prison reform came on record and said, ” that the reason inmates self harm repeatedly in custody is that they are in a terrible state of mind. They are scared, mentally ill and suffering from the troubled removal from their family as well as detoxing from drink and illegal drugs.”

So how can we prevent self harm in prisons and jails?

One way to protect the inmates from self harm is to ensure were possible that there is nothing in their cell or a general meeting areas to use as a weapon to harm themselves or others. When a non loop TV housing is used in either the cells or meeting areas, this prevents the prisoners from smashing the TV and using the shards of the screen as a weapon to attack others or harm themselves – which is one main problem less.

TV protection in jails.

There are several times of protective non loop TV housings, the best time were the ones with all four sides that taper, this prevents inmates from a looping material around the TV and harming themselves. Also the locks must be flush and of a high security standard.
Some people may be concerned about any possible heat build-up inside the housing, however this is overcome with a thermostatic cooling system inside the housing, this ensures the hardware is kept cool at all times.

The viewing window in front of the screen has to be a minimum of 1/4 inch thick Lexan material as this will withstand more physical attacks within a prison or jail environment.

Cable access is through the rear of the units in the wall as this prevents prisoners from accessing the cables to hurt them, we have to protect these vulnerable people in our custody.
