Outdoor Kiosk – Is This The Way Forward?

We will try and explain why you cannot just put an existing kiosk outdoors, because it needs to offer some sort of protection from the weather, harsh use and vandalism. This can be said when putting an LCD or plasma display outdoors in either portrait or landscape position.

We all want fast, convenient service, so when we discover an outdoor kiosk we think this is a fantastic approach however we are soon disappointed if the kiosk does not work.

When and if you are considering deploying a kiosk outdoors, one of the main considerations is that the unit has to be extremely rugged, so you must ask yourself these questions:

• How will the unit cope with ambient temperatures, extreme lighting, frequent rain and snow?
• Do you what specification you need for the kiosk, to ensure that is dependable and has a maximum uptime for users.

Convenient is what consumers demand, we all have busy lives and everyone is trying to claw a tiny moment from us for sending a marketing message, if you can combine convenience and technology you are on to winner, just look at the Apple aps you can get for your iPhone.

Industry experts foresee that outdoor kiosks will be leading the digital signage industry in less than 3 years, from college campuses to gas pump islands, outdoor kiosks will be used to attract customers, accept orders and provide information. One of the main reasons is that people are used to using indoor kiosks in malls etc so they will automatically migrate to the outdoor kiosks with no issues.

Gas Pump Signage.
Take for example, the pay-at-the pump options at gas stations, this has reduced the non fuel purchased dramatically, to the extent that convenience store owners are looking at outdoor kiosks to up sell their in-store merchandise and improve their bottom line, they are also looking at gas pump digital signage, as this is a boom industry! One idea is for patrons to be enticed into using outdoor kiosks to order food, beverages or even print coupons off for discounts on the in store merchandise.

The idea behind the kiosks that will be mounted by the fuel pump is that the customer fills up their car, then orders some foods, pays for it all outdoors and then goes into the store to collect their purchase, the alternative would be for the customer to fill up and go. I for one think this is a good idea, how many times have I filled up with fuel thinking I must get lunch soon…

Garden Centre Self Service kiosks.
Now one forward thinking garden centre partnered up with a software company who had developed a software package that would help people plan their gardens, they could design their garden, plant (in the virtual world) the plants they could select form the menu on the kiosk then when they were ready, they could pay and within 15 minutes the plants were all ready for them at the checkout for them to collect and go.

The idea was that this kiosk was a touch screen plant finder that located over 3,000 plants on the 10 acre garden centre site. Now the garden centre can offer an excellent customer experience without an employee in sight.
