How Digital Signage Can Save Lives…

No this is not some ridiculous claim, please read on, it could save your college children’s life.

We have seen over the past 3 years a rise in violent attacks against students at college, especially gun related killings. Now colleges are a place for learning and not death, that’s my understanding…it is not yours?

There are several projects were college campus’s are installing digital signage, this serves two purposes:

  • informing students of college activities, classrooms changes etc
  • incident alerts – telling students of any campus incidents and where to go that is safe

The unique thing about these projects is that the digital signage hardware is being funded by companies that are advertising on the digital signs, so these projects are self funding and are getting a lot of positive press in the USA.

Now this type of project is not restricted to the USA, as the new PFI builds for new school and college’s in the UK are also incorporating similar solutions, including open spaces that have bullet proof clear shields giving the impression of a clean and open space, but with the benefit of protecting against gun crime.

This is how the project will work, the LCD displays will be located in public areas and during normal activities the displays will feature the classroom changes and campus activities as well as selected advertising. As soon as there is an incident reported, a message will sent to the entire network of digital signs within a matter a seconds informing students where to go that is safe and more importantly where to avoid.

Some LCD displays will be put in to protective LCD enclosures, the units provide an ideal working environment irrelevant of the outside conditions, these are perfect for unmanned areas that are prone to vandalism. The LCD enclosures also protect any networked digital signage, including the media player, by restricting access.
